Course Introduction

This course provides a comprehensive overview of PSV and flare systems for oil & gas processing facilities. It begins with defining the need for pressure control (over pressure protection), continues with the key engineering and design aspects including code considerations and concludes with selecting and defining the components of both of PSV and a flare system. The material presented is applicable to onshore field production facilities, pipelines, gas plants, terminals and offshore production facilities.

In industrial & oil-gas plants the flare stacks are primarily used for burning off flammable gas released by pressure relief valves or others during unplanned over-pressuring of plant equipment. This course covers essential skills necessary for the safe and efficient design, operation and maintenance of these relief and flare systems by providing delegates with the knowledge, understanding and expertise to ensure a reliable operating processing facility

Objectives

  • Understand the purposes of flare system and the importance in safe operations
  • Understand the causes of over-pressure and the ways to control or mitigate them
  • Determining the set/relieving pressures to meet operational, safety, and code requirements
  • Selection and sizing of other key components of PSV & flare systems
  • Have a comprehensive overview of flare, blow down and pressure relief systems
  • Identify the different types of flares and review to improve the operation
  • Understand types, design, sizing of a pressure relief valve and a rupture disk
  • Understand the process hazards, LOPA, SIL, ESDs levels, ESD philosophy
  • Be aware of the important role of steam in smokeless flare operations
  • List the components used in relief and blowdown system and discuss its function
  • Understand how to operate a flare system competently
  • Be aware with the flare emissions and their effects on personnel and the environment
  • List the components used in relief and blowdown system and discuss its function
  • Understand the philosophy of zero flaring/flare gas recovery.
